There is a steady flow of information in the form of books, articles, white papers and training all on the subject of leadership. But how does this relate to you and your home business ?
1. What exactly is leadership ?
Your leadership ability is the sum of your character, knowledge and experiences at a given moment in time. What this means is that you can be a leader in any field you choose to apply yourself to as long as you can find a way to capitalize on these 3 major areas. One you find out what these are you become almost unstoppable in the success of your home business.
2. Leadership starts with self leadership
Before you can begin to lead a group of people, you first need to learn to lead yourself. Reflect on your own personality traits and your strengths and weaknesses. Once we know ourselves, and are positive about who we are and what we want, we are in the best position to capitalize on our strengths and “outsource” our weaknesses – ie. bring someone into the team who has the skills and qualities we are lacking ourselves.
3. Hone your communication skills
Warren Buffet once admitted that the greatest single determinant of his success was learning to communicate and sell.
Becoming a better communicator is not limited to your speaking skills either. Everything you do, say (or don’t do or say for that matter) or write says something about you and will either inspire confidence in your team or apprehension. Your ability to communicate effectively will undoubtedly improve your interpersonal skills and relationships.
4. Become an lifelong learner
Discover the art of lifelong learning. Examine different learning styles that work best for you and your team. Create a learning environment around you and your team members. This will encourage an environment of good decision making and cooperation.
So ultimately, I think, an exceptional leader is someone who recognizes the value of harnessing their own skills and abilities and that of their team members, and leads them toward greater efficiency and effectiveness. It’s a journey I myself have committed to in my own business, and what I am discovering is that leadership, particularly self leadership, is a never ending learning curve.
