What is Quantum Entanglement in Computing?

Quantum entanglement in computing is a phenomenon that arises from the principles of quantum mechanics, which allows particles to become interconnected and instantaneously affect each other, regardless of distance. This is in stark contrast to classical physics, where objects are influenced by each other through forces that don't act instantaneously.

In the context of quantum computing, entanglement is a powerful tool that enables quantum bits, or "qubits", to hold much more information than classical bits. While a classical bit can only hold a value of 0 or 1, a qubit can hold a superposition of states, meaning it can be both 0 and 1 at the same time. When qubits become entangled, the information they hold becomes linked, such that the state of one qubit directly influences the state of the other.

This feature of quantum entanglement has significant implications for computing, particularly in the fields of cryptography, data processing, and algorithm development. Quantum entanglement allows for the creation of complex and secure cryptographic keys, faster data processing due to the simultaneous manipulation of entangled qubits, and the development of new quantum algorithms that could potentially solve problems beyond the reach of classical computers.

Despite its promise, quantum entanglement also presents significant challenges. Maintaining entangled states is delicate work, requiring extremely low temperatures and isolation from external influences. Moreover, measuring an entangled state can disrupt the entanglement, a challenge known as "decoherence."

Quantum entanglement is a core principle in quantum computing that, while complex and challenging, holds the potential to revolutionise computing as we know it.
